Zakat Services
The Durham Islamic Society in Durham, Ontario, is dedicated to supporting the local community by collecting and distributing Zakat ul Maal to Muslims in need.
Calculating Zakat
Zakat is calculated at 2.5% of the wealth that exceeds the Nisab threshold.
The Nisab, as established by Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), is defined as either 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Scholars have allowed the use of either standard, so your Nisab threshold may vary based on the measure you choose.
Giving Zakat
Zakat-ul-maal can be donated to DIS via cash, check, or online payment.
Applying for Zakat
Please note that DIS will not process Zakat ul Maal applications during Ramadan and is currently only accepting applications for Zakat ul Fitr.
To apply for Zakat, download the DIS Zakat Application. Submit the completed form to the DIS Office for processing, which typically takes about 14 business days. If there is an emergency, please inform DIS at the time of submission so that the Zakat Committee can be notified promptly. All applications must be complete and adhere to the Zakat policy.
